Good Afternoon, Whitefield Public Library Friends,
You may have noticed that the EXPANSION of the library has (finally) begun. We are so excited that this project is underway and look forward to the completion of this new part of the building, which is currently on track to happen this coming summer. We would like to invite you to the official GROUNDBREAKING ceremony this week on Wednesday, October 7th at 11 AM. While we officially put a shovel in the ground in August, this gathering will give us an opportunity to celebrate the progress as the addition begins to take shape. We will have brief remarks followed by light refreshments and, of course, celebratory cake in the library. Please RSVP here: https://forms.gle/gW3qMN6nbLW45f1i7
We will also host an INFORMATIONAL PRESENTATION about the LIBRARY EXPANSION on Tuesday, October 27th at 6 PM. This project has been in the works for more than 4 years and has seen some ups and downs. The community has a lot of questions about what this expansion will mean, the process to get where we are, and where we go from here. Courtney will discuss the goal of the expansion, the process to get here, the challenges and successes, and what the expansion will and will not entail and why. If you want to hear the story and get the details, this presentation is for you! This presentation is sponsored by WOLF, who will provide light refreshments. We hope to see you there. Please RSVP here: https://forms.gle/8GzxmLdVuhwpCESbA

“Gloriously twisting . . . a heady campfire tale of a novel.”—The New York Times Book Review
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Time NPR BookRiot
Reality is broken. At first, it looks like a disease. An epidemic that spreads through no known means, driving its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. But the force that’s sweeping the world is no pathogen. It’s just the first shock wave, unleashed by a stunning discovery—and what’s in jeopardy is not our minds but the very fabric of time itself. In New York City, Detective Barry Sutton is closing in on the truth—and in a remote laboratory, neuroscientist Helena Smith is unaware that she alone holds the key to this mystery . . .and the tools for fighting back. Together, Barry and Helena will have to confront their enemy—before they, and the world, are trapped in a loop of ever-growing chaos.

We'll be exploring swoony page-turners full of love, drama, and just the right amount of spice; all in good company! RSVP is required by October 12th so we have enough snacks, seats, and supplies. A richly imagined work inspired by literature’s most haunting love triangle, this gothic romance brings Edgar Allan Poe, his devoted wife, and his brilliant mistress to life in a dark tale of obsession, betrayal, and literary ambition to which Sara Gruen says, “Mrs. Poe had my heart racing...Don't miss it!”
New York City, 1845. Gaslit streets and crowded avenues pulse with opportunity and danger as Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” takes the literary world by storm. For Frances Osgood, a gifted but struggling poet and mother of two abandoned by her husband, Poe’s success feels impossibly out of reach. When she is invited to meet the infamous writer at an intimate literary gathering, she hopes only for professional encouragement—never expecting to be drawn into his dangerous orbit.
Though initially unimpressed by Poe’s work, Frances is captivated by his intellect, charm, and the startling revelation that he admires her poetry. What begins as flirtation soon deepens into a passionate, illicit affair. But the situation grows increasingly unsettling when Poe’s fragile wife, Virginia, insists on befriending Frances, weaving the three into a web of intimacy, secrecy, and fear.
As Frances becomes trapped between desire and dread, she begins to sense that Virginia’s devotion may mask something far more frightening. Haunting, suspenseful, and emotionally charged, this novel reimagines one of literature’s most infamous love triangles, exploring the cost of genius, the peril of obsession, and the fine line between romance and ruin.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allen Poe
Between 1841 and 1844, Edgar Allan Poe invented the genre of detective fiction with three mesmerizing stories of a young French eccentric named C. Auguste Dupin. Introducing to literature the concept of applying reason to solving crime, these tales brought Poe fame and fortune. Years later, Dorothy Sayers would describe “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” as “almost a complete manual of detective theory and practice.” Indeed, Poe’s short mysteries inspired the creation of countless literary sleuths, among them Sherlock Holmes. Today, the unique Dupin stories still stand out as utterly engrossing page-turners.

This class will introduce participants to the basics of CNC technology, explain how the machines work, and explore several options for building an affordable, functional CNC for home use.
Tanner will walk participants through the basic mechanics of a CNC machine, demonstrate how the machine moves, and answer questions about the parts, tools, software, and materials needed to get started. While we will not perform a live cutting demonstration due to noise and dust concerns, participants will gain a practical understanding of how a CNC operates and what it takes to build one.
What You Will Learn
The basic mechanics and operation of a CNC machine.
Different options for building an at-home CNC, including the advantages and disadvantages of each.
What parts and components you will need to purchase.
How to choose components that work together.
The basics of using a CNC for woodworking, acrylic projects, and light metalworking.
What to expect when assembling, troubleshooting, and maintaining your own machine.
Each participant will receive a parts list to use as a starting point for purchasing components and planning their own build for around $300, compared to $1,000+.
My Experience and Approach - Tanner Thompson
I have built my own CNC machine and performed numerous tests and projects to learn what works, what doesn't, and what challenges you may encounter along the way. My experience is primarily with woodworking, acrylic, and light metalworking. I am not an advanced machining expert, and this class is not intended to cover industrial CNC machining or advanced metal-cutting techniques. Instead, the focus is on practical knowledge, accessible build options, and helping you get started with a machine of your own
Participants who want to move forward with a build can work with me to arrange a follow-up session where we can assemble machines, troubleshoot problems, and work through the challenges that often come with building and setting up an at-home CNC.

October Book: Frozen in Time by Mitchell Zuckoff
Pick up a copy of the book at the library
#1 New York Times bestseller!
Frozen in Time is a gripping true story of survival, bravery, and honor in the vast Arctic wilderness during World War II, from the author of New York Times bestseller Lost in Shangri-La.
On November 5, 1942, a US cargo plane slammed into the Greenland Ice Cap. Four days later, the B-17 assigned to the search-and-rescue mission became lost in a blinding storm and also crashed. Miraculously, all nine men on board survived, and the US military launched a daring rescue operation. But after picking up one man, the Grumman Duck amphibious plane flew into a severe storm and vanished.
Frozen in Time tells the story of these crashes and the fate of the survivors, bringing vividly to life their battle to endure 148 days of the brutal Arctic winter, until an expedition headed by famed Arctic explorer Bernt Balchen brought them to safety. Mitchell Zuckoff takes the reader deep into the most hostile environment on earth, through hurricane-force winds, vicious blizzards, and subzero temperatures.
Moving forward to today, he recounts the efforts of the Coast Guard and North South Polar Inc. – led by indefatigable dreamer Lou Sapienza – who worked for years to solve the mystery of the Duck’s last flight and recover the remains of its crew.
A breathtaking blend of mystery and adventure Mitchell Zuckoff's Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II is also a poignant reminder of the sacrifices of our military personnel and a tribute to the everyday heroism of the US Coast Guard.
